Print book formatting services
Give the manuscript a considered page.
Print formatting shapes the interior of a physical book: how chapters begin, how text sits within the page and how the sequence reads from opening to end. It starts with the manuscript and the edition you intend to make.

What print formatting means
The page gives the text its reading rhythm.
Print book formatting arranges a manuscript for a chosen physical edition. Type, margins, hierarchy, running elements and white space work together so readers can follow the book without noticing the machinery of the page.
This is a layout stage. It does not replace the editorial work of shaping sentences or correcting a manuscript, and the precise production requirements depend on the eventual print route.
When to begin
A stable manuscript makes layout decisions more useful.
Formatting can be discussed earlier, but substantial changes to text or chapter order may change the pages again. These signals help frame a useful conversation.
The text
The main wording is close to the version intended for the print edition, with major editorial questions considered.
The structure
Chapter order, headings, notes and front or back matter are identified, even if small details still need discussion.
The edition
The likely physical format and production route are in view, so page decisions can be made with their context in mind.
Inside the book
The quiet decisions readers feel.
An interior is more than text placed on paper. Its hierarchy and spacing guide the eye through different kinds of material.
01 / Hierarchy
Find the levels
Titles, chapter headings, subheads, notes and body text each need a clear relationship to the whole.
02 / Spacing
Set a reading pace
Line length, leading, paragraph space and margins affect the feel of a page and the ease of following it.
03 / Openings
Mark new chapters
A chapter opening can create a pause and establish a consistent pattern for the reader.
04 / Structure
Hold the sequence
Page numbers, running elements, images and additional matter need to belong to the intended edition.
Before layout begins
Gather the material that defines the edition.
The exact brief depends on the book. These are useful questions to settle or discuss, not a promise of a fixed intake checklist.
Manuscript and order
Which text version is current? Are chapters, headings, notes, contents and other sections in their intended order?
Special content
Are there images, tables, quotations, footnotes or other elements that change how a page needs to be composed?
Physical edition
What print format and production path are being considered? Final specifications should be checked against that route.
Two distinct services
Print pages and ebook reading behave differently.
The same manuscript can call for separate preparation for a physical edition and a digital edition. One service does not automatically include the other.
Physical edition
Print book formatting
A page has a defined size and sequence. Type, margins, page breaks and any images are considered in that fixed setting.
Digital edition
Ebook formatting
Digital reading may adapt to a device and reader settings. Its structure and requirements need to be considered separately.
A coherent edition
The interior informs the cover and the publication path.
A print interior helps establish the book’s physical extent. Cover planning and production requirements can then be considered in relation to that edition; the details depend on the chosen route.
Cover design
Front, spine and back decisions belong to the intended physical format and the interior that will sit inside it.
Publishing preparation
The final production path determines what needs to be checked before any file is used for publication.
Before you begin
Questions about print interiors.
Is formatting the same as editing?
No. Editing considers the text and how it works; formatting considers how that text is arranged in a chosen edition. Changes to the wording or structure after layout can affect the pages.
Do I need to know the final print size?
You can discuss an interior before every physical detail is settled. The selected format and production route will shape the eventual page layout and file requirements.
Does print formatting include an ebook?
No automatic inclusion is implied. Ebook formatting is a distinct service because digital reading behaves differently from fixed print pages. The scope for each edition needs to be agreed.
What should I look for when reviewing an interior?
Read through the chapter sequence and check headings, notes, images and other matter. Consider whether the hierarchy and page rhythm support the book. Any review rounds or file handoff need an agreed scope.
