Design & prepare
Ebook formatting services
Give the digital edition its own reading flow.
Ebook formatting considers the structure and presentation of a manuscript as readers move through a digital edition. Headings, navigation, images and the order of material all contribute to a coherent experience.

The service
What ebook formatting means.
Ebook formatting prepares a manuscript’s hierarchy, sequence and visual treatment for digital reading. The aim is to make the book’s parts understandable as readers move from section to section.
It is a preparation stage for a digital edition. It does not itself settle the editorial content, the cover or the eventual publishing route; those questions can be scoped alongside it.
A different reading space
Digital text is not a fixed print page.
In many digital reading settings, text can reflow as a reader changes the display and reading preferences. The book still needs a clear order, hierarchy and path through its material. Specific output and compatibility requirements depend on the chosen route.
01 / Structure
Organise the parts
Chapters, headings and additional matter form a sequence that can be understood without fixed page numbers.
02 / Movement
Guide navigation
A reader should be able to recognise where sections begin and how the edition is arranged.
03 / Content
Consider variation
Images, notes, tables and other material may need particular attention in a changing reading space.
When to begin
Start with a stable version of the book.
The project can be discussed before every detail is final. For actual formatting, a manuscript close to its intended digital-edition wording and structure helps avoid repeating layout decisions after major changes.
Text and sequence
Settle substantial edits and identify the chapter order, even if smaller questions remain to discuss.
Additional material
Gather images, captions, notes, tables and any front or back matter intended for the digital edition.
Edition context
Consider where the ebook may be published; final file requirements need to be checked for that chosen path.
Inside the digital edition
Structure carries the reader forward.
These are useful areas to consider when defining the brief. Their treatment depends on the manuscript and the edition rather than a fixed checklist of deliverables.
01
Headings
A clear hierarchy distinguishes the book’s major parts from its smaller subdivisions.
02
Navigation
Contents and section breaks can help readers orient themselves as they move through the edition.
03
Images and notes
Placement and context matter when visual or supporting material appears alongside the text.
04
Reading flow
Paragraphs, transitions and emphasis should retain a coherent relationship as the display changes.
Before formatting begins
Bring the manuscript and its structure into view.
A useful discussion can begin with the current text version, its intended order and the digital edition you have in mind. The exact information requested would be set for the project.
Current manuscript
Which file is the current version? Are chapter headings and other structural levels identifiable?
Special elements
Are there images, captions, notes, tables, quotations or links that need to be considered?
Publishing context
What digital publication route is being considered, and which requirements remain to be confirmed?
Two distinct services
An ebook and a print interior need separate plans.
The same manuscript can become more than one edition, but Ebook Formatting and Book Formatting address different reading conditions. Neither service automatically includes the other.
Digital reading
Ebook Formatting
Structure, navigation and presentation are considered for a digital reading space that can change with the reader’s settings.
Physical pages
Book Formatting
Typography and material are arranged for a chosen physical edition with a defined page size and sequence.
Part of a wider route
The digital interior meets the publication plan.
Formatting is one part of a digital edition. Cover direction, book information and the requirements of an eventual publication route should be considered together before any handoff is defined.
Ebook publishing
Publication planning considers the digital edition and the information needed for its chosen route. Specific requirements must be checked there.
Wider preparation
Editorial work, cover design and other support may connect to the edition, but each service needs its own agreed scope.
Before you begin
Questions about digital interiors.
Is ebook formatting the same as a PDF of my print book?
They are different preparation questions. A fixed print page and a digital reading space may call for different structure and presentation. The output requirements for a chosen publication route should be confirmed separately.
Does ebook formatting include print formatting?
No automatic inclusion is implied. Book Formatting concerns a physical edition. Ebook Formatting concerns the digital edition, and each needs its own scope.
What if the manuscript changes after formatting?
Substantial wording or structural changes can affect the formatted edition. The impact and any additional review should be discussed as part of the project scope.
Will the ebook work on every device or retailer?
No device or retailer acceptance guarantee is offered on this staging page. The intended publication route and its current requirements need to be checked before defining technical deliverables or testing.
